A PARAMOUNT PICTURE

SYNCHRONIZATION STARTS

                                                   DISSOLVE INTO:

     INT.  SCHOOL ROOM

     SYNCHRONIZED

     MEDIUM SHOT

Robert Benchley standing on platform.  CAMERA TRUCKS UP

     slowly to him.

                         BENCHLEY

For those of you who don't go to the

               movies --

     SYNCHRONIZATION STOPS

                         BENCHLEY

-- let me introduce myself.  My name's

               Robert Benchley.

                     (PAUSE)

Well, no matter.  For one reason or

another, the motion picture which you

are about to see is not very clear in

spots.  As a matter of fact, it was made

to demonstrate how not to make a motion

picture and at the same time win an

Academy Award.  Now, someone in what is

known as "the front office" has thought

that an occasional word from me might

help to clarify the plot and other vague

               portions of the film.

                    (LAUGHING)

Personally, I doubt it.  Shall we go?

                         CHESTER

Oh, no you don't!  Alaska!  In case you

               ain't heard, it's cold up there!  It's

                         DUKE

               It's Utopia.  Everybody's getting some

          CHESTER

Look, Svengali, you been hypnotizing me

          DUKE

Me - chiseling you?

          CHESTER

You chiseling me.  I got a record of

every chizz.

Chester gets book out of pocket.

28.  CLOSE SHOT Duke and Chester.

          DUKE

This is fantastic!

          DUKE

It's right here in black and white.

Niagara Falls -- three hundred dollars

for hospital bills.  Great promotion.

All you had to do was find some yokel

and send him over the Falls in a barrel.

          DUKE

It was a great stunt.

          CHESTER

Great stunt?  I almost broke my neck.

Pittsburgh!  Chicago!  And how about

Kansas City?  You picked my pocket of

seventy-five bucks so you could take

Mabel Bronschweiger out riding in a

horse and buggy.

          DUKE

Ahh, Mabel Bronschweiger!

          CHESTER

Ohh.

          DUKE

Lady blacksmith.  She was your girl.

          CHESTER

My girl!

                         DUKE

               What a right hand!  Ohh!

                         CHESTER

Yeah, I sat in the hotel lobby for four

hours while you took her for a ride in

               the woods.

29.  CLOSEUP Duke; Chester tipped in f.g.

                         DUKE

Well, what do you care as long as she

didn't I front for you in Oklahoma?

30.  CLOSEUP Chester; Duke tipped in f.g.

                         CHESTER

               Hilda, the oilman's daughter?

                         DUKE

               Sent you in there.

                         CHESTER

Was she born or did they have to drill

               for her?

                         DUKE

You shouldn't say that.  Packed in a lot

               of groceries.

     Chester points to book.

                         CHESTER

               Maud!  Sophie!  Hortense!  Twelve

hundred dollars worth right there!  But

I'll settle for this.  If you want to go

to Alaska and be a blubber ball for a

bunch of trained seals, go ahead - I'm

               heading home.

31.  MEDIUM SHOT Duke and Chester.  Chester exits.

down at table, picks up cards.

                         DUKE

               Well, okay, Chester, I - I can't stand

in your way.  If that's the way you feel

about it, well, I guess that's the way

               you feel.

                         CHESTER

That's the way I feel about it!

                         DUKE

               Okay.

                         CHESTER

And don't start telling my fortune.  It

               won't do you any good.

     Duke lays cards out.

                         DUKE

Hmm!  What do you think of this?  A

black nine on a red Jack.

                         CHESTER

You used those cards to trick me into

every crooked deal we ever had.  But no

               more, see.  I'm too smart.

                         DUKE

               Woop, woop, woop, woop, woop!

Chester comes around bed to Duke.

                         CHESTER

You're wastin' your time, Duke Johnson.

I'm going right back where I -- What is

               it?  What does it say?

                         DUKE

               Nothing, really - nothing.

                         CHESTER

Yeah, you can say that again.  I know

               those cards.

                         DUKE

               Why, this is amazing!

                         CHESTER

They're as phony as you are.  It's a

lucky thing I'm smart enough --

     Chester starts away.

                         DUKE

               I-yi-yi!

                    (whistles)

     Chester reacts, comes back.

                         CHESTER

What is it?  What do you see?

                         DUKE

               Forget it.  You're not interested.

Chester grabs Duke, pulls him to his feet.

                         CHESTER

               It's a partnership, ain't it?  Come on,

               what do you see?

                         DUKE

Well, Chester, it's us.  We're back in

               New York.

                         CHESTER

               New York?

                         DUKE

               Yes, and we're rich.

CAMERA PANS as they sit down on bed.

                         CHESTER

          DUKE

Oh, let `em have it.  We're loaded.

We've got billions.

          CHESTER

Oh, that's fine.  Where'd we get it?

the biggest end.

          DUKE

Oh, you've always had much the biggest

end.

I want you to feel, Chester, that

          CHESTER

Duke, that little speech touched me.

We're pals.  If we want something, we

don't have to ask for it.  We know it's

there - and we take it.

          DUKE

Well, this is it, son.  Let me have one

last look at you.

          CHESTER

Duke, I --

          DUKE

Yeah, but on top you're a rat!

                         DUKE

                         CHESTER

               Are you kiddin'?!

Chester looks around room, sees porthole.

                         CHESTER

We're not puttin' the money in your

pocket - we're not putting the money in

my pocket.  We're puttin' it where it

belongs - in the safe.

Chester turns, crosses to porthole, opens it, throws money

out.

He closes the porthole, comes forward.

                         DUKE

I don't know what Sperry and McGurk did

               That's the rush!

                         DUKE

Plenty of time, Chester.  You'd better

Never leave me, Sal.  You'll suffer.

                         SAL

Not for anything in the world.  Not even

He reacts, pulls back away from her.

                         CHESTER

               Uh - gold mine?

                         SAL

               Money doesn't matter to me.  I don't

               care how poor you are.

                         CHESTER

               Gold mine!  With nuggets!

                         SAL

               Sperry, don't be facetious.

                         CHESTER

Aw, keep politics out of this.  I tell

you, I've got the biggest gold mine in

Alaska, that's all.  And it's ours, Sal

               - yours and mine.

                         SAL

               Well, what about your partner?

                         CHESTER

Who - Porky?  Just a stooge.  Carry him

around for laughs.  Once we get that map

                         SAL

Well, where does he keep it?

                         CHESTER

               I'm sorry, we don't tell anyone.  We're

               no fools.

                         SAL

               Not even me?

                         CHESTER

               Not even you.

                         SAL

               I hope it's in a safe place.

                         CHESTER

In a safe place!  Who'd ever think of

lookin' in his hat?  We're not amateurs,

               you know.

                         SAL

I can see that.  Well, darling, it's

               I said Alater@.  Midnight?  My

               apartment?  Supper?

                         CHESTER

               I'm not hungry.

                         CHESTER

You know, I'd consider Sal showin' up

                         DUKE

                         CHESTER

               `Course, I will admit there's something

     SYNCHRONIZED

                         DUKE

There, you see what I mean?  You don't

                         CHESTER

               No?!

                         CHESTER

               Yeah, you're using loaded bait.

Besides, when it comes to fishin', you

                         SAL

do was sit around and catch one little

               fish - one crummy fish.

64.  CLOSE SHOT Chester and Sal.  She puts her arm around him.

You wouldn't say where his map is, would

you?

          DUKE

You're darn right I wouldn't.  It can

                         DUKE

                    (on)

Put her to bed and see she gets some
