7 The Thin Red Line Actors Whose Roles Were Cut

Terrence Malick is notorious for his unconventional filmmaking style, sometimes omitting entire performances in the editing room, which was very much the case with the director's 1998 war movie The Thin Red Line. Malick's soulful adaptation of James Jones' 1962 novel was his first film in two decades, with the director assembling a formidable ensemble of Hollywood talent, headed up by Jim Cavaziel in what would prove to be a breakout role. However, Cavaziel's Robert E. Witt was not originally intended to be the film's lead; The Thin Red Line only took shape in the edit, which meant certain roles received less focus than expected.

Several actors fell victim to the final cut of The Thin Red Line, their roles either reduced to minor speaking parts after being billed as more, or excised from the story entirely. Such cuts caused friction in the run-up to the Terrence Malick movie's release, with some stars supposedly only discovering their reduced roles shortly before its 1998 premiere. It is difficult to determine every actor whose role was reduced, as some have been less open about the behind-the-scenes process on The Thin Red Line than others. There are a select few who endured the brunt of the cuts, however, with each being impacted by the edit differently.

7 - Mickey Rourke

One of the more notable cuts made in the final cut of The Thin Red Line came at the expense of Mickey Rourke, who had a role as a scout sniper that encounters Witt on Guadalcanal. One of these scenes was restored for the Criterion release of The Thin Red Line, and depicts Rourke emerging from the jungle with his scoped Springfield slung over his shoulder. This is all that remains of Rourke's performance, providing a glimpse of a ghostly figure who quickly fades back into the island scenery.

Rourke has spoken of his regret that his Thin Red Line role was cut, stating in a 2005 interview with Contact Music that his performance was "some of the best work" he had done, and that it had been cut for "political reasons." The latter part of Rourke's claim remains unproven, especially when so many other actors were also cut from the project, but it is still understandable that he would be upset. Although only a minute of Rourke's performance can be viewed, it appears to be just as committed as those given by his fellow cast members, and seems in keeping with Malick's reflective approach to the source material.

6 - Bill Pullman

Another of The Thin Red Line's cast to have his role completely cut from the theatrical release, Bill Pullman's presence in the film can be seen in promotional stills. How significant this performance was remains unclear, but given the size of the ensemble and Pullman not weighing in on his role being lost, it seems doubtful that it was a major contribution. Pullman's other significant acting roles in the 1990s came in Independence Day, Lost Highway, and Casper. He has not appeared in a war film since the making of The Thin Red Line.

5 - Billy Bob Thornton

Although never tapped for a physical role in The Thin Red Line, Billy Bob Thornton is said to have recorded over two hours' worth of narration for the film - all of which was cut in the edit (via C&B). Those who have seen The Thin Red Line will recall that narration is used, but that it is mostly Witt's inner monologue. It is impossible to judge what Thornton's narration brought to The Thin Red Line without any footage, but his lines may have lent a more documentary-style feel to proceedings, which could have proved jarring alongside the more dreamlike and intimate approach taken in the finished cut.

4 - Lukas Haas

Known more for his performances in Witness, Mars Attacks, and more recently movies from Damien Chazelle like First Man and Babylon, Lukas Haas is another actor whose role in The Thin Red Line was cut entirely. Little material exists on Haas' role, apart from him sharing a publicity still with the aforementioned Pullman, so it is difficult to determine exactly what his contribution was. However, as with Pullman, Haas has not widely discussed being cut and the lack of footage surrounding his role in The Thin Red Line, so it seems unlikely that his was a significant part.

3 - Gary Oldman

While Rourke, Pullman, and Haas all filmed scenes for The Thin Red Line, Gary Oldman has the strange distinction of having been cut before making it onto set in the first place. Malick reportedly wrote a part specifically for the British actor but cut it from the script before filming commenced due to the already large size of the cast. Which character Gary Oldman would have played has never come to light, but it is interesting to consider how The Thin Red Line would have shaped up with him among its ranks.

2 - Adrien Brody

Despite Rourke, Pullman, and Haas all filming scenes for The Thin Red Line and being cut entirely, Adrien Brody suffered from the final cut the most. Brody plays Corporal Geoffrey Fife, who in the book is one of the main characters. However, the theatrical cut of The Thin Red Line reduces Fife to a background figure delivering only a few small lines of dialogue, with Malick having re-angled the picture to focus on Cavaziel's Witt.

Brody claimed in interviews years later that he was unaware of how much of his performance had been cut while conducting press for The Thin Red Line, supposedly only discovering the cut at a media junket before the film's premiere. Speaking to The Independent in 2001, Brody described the situation surrounding his performance as "extremely unpleasant," and that he felt enormous pressure at supposedly having to "carry" the film next to peers whose work he appreciated. To then go on and discover he was barely in The Thin Red Line at all came as a huge disappointment, particularly as it was meant to be a breakout performance.

1 - George Clooney

As one of the highest-billing actors for The Thin Red Line with the least screen time, it is perhaps no surprise that George Clooney was one of those unfortunate enough to have his role cut by Malick in the edit. Clooney portrays Captain Charles Bosche in the war movie, and shows up for around a minute in the closing act. Clooney confirmed that his role had indeed been cut from The Thin Red Line in a roundtable with Newsweek (now The Daily Beast) in 2012, during which he also discussed the story of Brody discovering his lead part was no more.
